CoderDojo steps in Hyderabad.

CoderDojo is a global movement of free, volunteer-led,  community based programming clubs for young people. At a Dojo, young people, learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology in an informal and creative environment, a social space where people can go to explore technology together and get advice and support from skilled mentors. In Dojos young people get the opportunity to make apps, websites, games, play with robotics and more. In addition to learning to code attendees meet like minded people and are exposed to the possibilities of technology.

Within the CoderDojo Movement there is a focus on community, peer learning, youth mentoring and self led learning,  with an emphasis on showing how coding is a force for change in the world. The global CoderDojo community is supported by the CoderDojo Foundation. The CoderDojo Foundation consists of a core team based primarily in Dublin, Ireland. Founded by the co-founder of the very first CoderDojo James Whelton, the Foundation is focused on supporting new and existing Dojos through resource and community development while also scaling CoderDojo through partnerships and creating awareness globally.

The chapter of Codedojo in the city starts at Collab House. As people know Collab House as the hub of activities for open tech communities, we’ve double quoted our mission once again  by embracing one of the most prominent programming community globally, ‘CoderDojo’. The alignment of ideology between Coderdojo and Collab House is the most essential reason for starting this initiative. On our goal of creating the global hub of connected communities, now we have another member in our team.

The chapter or a regional community of Coderdojo is called a ‘Dojo’, there are more than 1000 Dojos world wide, spanning across 63 countries. Named as ‘Hyderabad@CollabHouse’, Coderdojo-Hyderabad would be having an event every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month. Young people from various backgrounds would be invited to learn about programming, electronics and robotics.

On 1st of June 2016, Collab House hosted the first event of CoderDojo-Hyderabad. With the well planned agenda and strategic time frame, the event was super exciting for all the attendees. We’ve had a session on design thinking for prototyping an electronics project and then jumped off with building prototypes using Arduino. The session on Arduino programming was the most energetic with every student beaming with the entusiam to learn stuff and build cool projects.

Harsha is the organiser of this dojo and we have many exciting things under pipeline for the coming events of Coderdojo-Hyderabad.

Centralised Hackathon on IoT.

At Collab House we are excited to build on platforms that empower people across – students, entrepreneurs, makers, artists to make impact. We are an essential part of every maker/hacker initiatives in the city.Collab House in collaboration with Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK), Hyderabad Software Enterprises Association (HYSEA), Educational Institutions and Implementation partners Uptec Idealabs Ltd. and Innovators of India(IoI) have initiated IoT – Makerspace program in Telangana State. As part of the program, various educational institutes in the city have actively participated to setup a Maker space in their respective institutes and support maker/hacker activities on campus with a structured curriculum of trainings and hackathons.

Students have been trained in various IoT technologies along with programming platforms to make products/prototypes aimed at solving the major problems that people face. A set of selected students from each college are made to participate in the centralised hackathon, organised at IIIT-Hyderabad. A 3-day hackathon, powered with talks and session on Ideation, Design Thinking and product prototyping.

 

The day 1 started off on 15ht April 2016, with Ideation workshop by Mrs. Meenakshi. The students were given insights about how an idea should be evaluated. Students were amazingly active with off-the-mark ideas which could become the next big thing in the tech industry. The motto was to solve major paining points that public face. The students were to work on their ideas for the next 2 and a half days. In the second half of the day, a visit to LVPEI-Srujana Innovation centre and T-HUB was planned, to make the students aware of how, research and work goes hand in hand while building a product prototype. That was an energetic day with 94 participants, 67 ideas pitched, 17 shortlisted for prototyping.

Hyderabad Product Leaders team visited the IoT Maker Space hackathon at CIE-IIIT, on Saturday, 16th April 2016. The visiting Hyderabad Product Leaders team included Satish Chandra Paled and Rajasekar from OpenText, Avneesh Bhatnagar and Rajeev Kumar from CA Technologies and Ramesh Swaminathan from Informatica. They were joined by Sreekanth Rangavajhala from Progress Software.
It was a informal and free wheeling interaction where the senior Product Managers from HPL shared their experiences and journey and gave inputs to the participants.

Rajeev from CA technologies shared how he has always followed the ‘WHY’ theory and advised the young participants to constantly seek the answer for ‘Why’ in everything they attempt. Avneesh advised the students to be focused and apply knowledge that they acquire. Raj urged the students to network and improve their interpersonal skills.The leaders from some of the best known product companies were very happy and appreciated the fact that two-thirds of the participants in the hackathon were women and quite proactive in asking questions. The students looked very excited and had some interesting questions for the visiting team.

Earlier, Pankaj Diwan( UPTEC Idealabs) explained the concept and detailed outline of the Maker Space activities on college campus. The design thinking workshop by Sreekanth Rangavajhala, UI/UX Manager at Progress Software has had a visible impact on every maker/hacker in the hall in designing their prototypes. As design is the most crucial part in a product development, the workshop on design thinking is essential for the students tinkering with their models.
The hacking and making continued till 1 PM of the 3rd day, 17th April 2016. The students were seen focused with building amazing prototypes. Hardware, software, cross-platformed prototypes were on their way to get demonstrated as workable projects. The platforms like Arduino, RaspberryPi, Android and many other technologies were meticulously hacked by students in order make some cool products.
The second half of the 3rd day was planned to have the projects demonstrated and awards for the best 3 prototypes. Based on criteria like, Feasibility of the idea, Impact of the idea, Scalability of the product and Level of product completion, 6 teams were awarded with prizes. The students of ACE Engineering college, trained by Collab House, have secured winning positions for their prototypes.

IoT day is a worldwide event bringing together makers, entrepreneurs, industry leaders, and citizens to discuss, design and develop the emerging projects and trends in Internet of Things. Initiated in 2011 by IoT Council and Postscapes, the event has grown in scale and scope to match the growing interest in the subject.

Since its inception in 2011, April 9 has been observed by a niche audience as global IoT Day in honor of the “Internet of Things,” which is projected to comprise some 50 billion connected devices by 2020.

According to organisers at the IoT Council: “Anyone is free to create an IoT Day event in your local community. It doesn’t matter whether you are participating from an entrepreneur, engineer, industrial designer or novice perspective: the events will offer different types of activities tailored to local audiences form around the world. The time is now to start having the important conversations on the technologies, security, data privacy and enormous potential that an ‘Internet of Things’ is capable of.”

 

Collab House is a hub of activity in the city for IoT and hardware related stuff. Collab House hosted the first ever ‘IoT day’ in India, bringing together most prominent maker/hacker communities in the city on to a single platform for networking and collaborations. Hardware communities like Hackster, iRaspberryPi, Potential labs, Maker Club, Firefox Connected Devices, Arduino Community  have come together to demonstrate their products and share their insights regarding the present global trends of ‘Internet of Things’. The hall was reverberating with talks and discussions on the cutting edge technologies and the projects that they are working on. When people people shared their vision on making the society a better place to live while connecting the global communities through connected devices, other members in the hall had put together their hands to help them.

Collab House hosts the most active maker/hacker community in the city. While we say ‘Make with the best in the city’, we bring all the maker/hacker communities around, on to a single platform to work collaboratively. Initiating something takes time and we have got an amazing head-start to penetrate in to the global maker community while adventuring and adopting all technology platforms in the present ‘tech gen’ with an enduring impact.

 

Here at Collab House we celebrated Arduino/Genuino day as a remark of the invention of most adopted Open Source technology, ‘Arduino’. Arduino Day is a worldwide birthday celebration of Arduino and Genuino. People interested in Arduino and Genuino get together, share their experiences, and learn more.

About Arduino:

Arduino is an open-source prototyping platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. Arduino boards are able to read inputs – light on a sensor, a finger on a button, or a Twitter message – and turn it into an output – activating a motor, turning on an LED, publishing something online. You can tell your board what to do by sending a set of instructions to the microcontroller on the board. To do so you use the Arduino programming language (based on Wiring), and the Arduino Software (IDE), based on Processing.

Over the years Arduino has been the brain of thousands of projects, from everyday objects to complex scientific instruments. A worldwide community of makers – students, hobbyists, artists, programmers, and professionals – has gathered around this open-source platform, their contributions have added up to an incredible amount of accessible knowledge that can be of great help to novices and experts alike.

Arduino was born at the Ivrea Interaction Design Institute as an easy tool for fast prototyping, aimed at students without a background in electronics and programming. As soon as it reached a wider community, the Arduino board started changing to adapt to new needs and challenges, differentiating its offer from simple 8-bit boards to products for IoT applications, wearable, 3D printing, and embedded environments. All Arduino boards are completely open-source, empowering users to build them independently and eventually adapt them to their particular needs. The software, too, is open-source, and it is growing through the contributions of users worldwide.

 

At Collab House, we planned a full day event engaging various maker communities in the city. We start off with a an ‘Introduction to Arduino’ and continued with the advancements of the Arduino boards in the past couple of years. Then we had a line of sessions on possibility of projects using Arduino. Later we screened a 5 minute TED talk on Open-Sourcing technology. The energy and excitement of the attendees was visible. It was a classic day with positive vibes all around. The second half had most of the hand-on sessions and people demonstrated the makes and hacks that they have developed using Arduino. It was a knowledge exchanging interval while various communities sharing thier projects with others.

Collab House has always promoted technical, scientific and artistic skills through projects, collaboration and education including but not limited to encouraging research, knowledge exchange, learning and mentoring with each other and the community at large. Learning activities include understanding maker culture,Internet of Things (IoT), design thinking, prototyping and building things.We believe that the convergence of Internet, Hardware, and Computing will change the course of our personal and professional lives. Having these set of Skills are important for 21st century to build a generation of informed creators.

At Collab House we combine tools, community, and education for the purposes of enabling members to learn, design, prototype and create. The aim is to foster innovative thinking among the youth so they develop the skills to solve the real world problems with a scientific approach.

JNTU Excite 2015 is a boot camp initiative by JNTU, HYSEA & TASK in association with Collab House to bring faculty, students and industry mentors on a collaborative platform for learning and product prototyping. In order to discover, nurture and refine tech product ideas from engineering students in a collaborative manner, the organisations have planned to implement a pilot of JNTU Excite as a content packed workshop. This has created excitement among budding engineers to play around and open up with ideas, products and product entrepreneurship.

An Overview of JNTU Excite program.

  • Based on the industry 2-year-projections survey, it is essential for engineering students to focus on latest advancements in hardware as well as software. The specific courses are now being discussed and will soon be defined for addition to the curriculum. While focusing on an active industry participation, faculty development and continuous-assessment of students performance is assessed through TASK. The courses having a strong practical content are delivered in the form of a workshop.
  • A summer workshop for Product engineering has been proposed, to be initiated immediately as a pilot project. The summer workshop will be considered as equivalent to the 2-credit ‘Industry oriented mini-project’ .
  • This will soon be part of the JNTU curriculum as a summer course to be continued as the final year project. Immediate objective is to build practical understanding of product engineering among the engineering students. With a secondary objective of seeding new startups through products proposed and prototyped in the workshop.
  • The workshop proposal has two parts:
    • Faculty Development (product engineering, contemporary technologies like Mobile/cloud, and IoT)
    • Actual summer workshop for students ending with a product prototyping.
  • Faculty development will be taken up through three short workshops by the industry from March to May. The same faculty will be at the summer workshop as mentors to the student teams at the workshop; and will also experience the product engineering workshop closely.

Maker Space has been conceived with a vision to foster an active collaboration between the Academia, Students and Industry – open all vistas of learning, imbibe a culture of exploring, probing and experimenting and effectively transform the student force into an Industry ready engineering workforce, thought leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Maker Space shall help in facilitate industry participation and build confidence amongst students to collaborate with Industry to build innovative solutions, participate in internships and placements,  an opportunity to be part of the Innovation /entrepreneurship ecosystem which has been limited to very few premiere colleges in India. It will also help in improving skill development and increasing the quality and quantum of placements. The initiative is being supported by a wide consortium of Industry, Academia and Government.

 

The colleges who participated in JNTU-EXCITE 2015 are being the first preference for this registration to set up their on campus maker spaces.

As the first phase of the programme, Collab House has organised a one week workshop at ACE Engineering college starting form 24th February 2016 and lasting till 1st March 2016. With the prime focus on IoT and electronics, the schedule was filled with content relevant to the latest maker technologies. Prasan Dutt Raju and Shakthi Priyan being the trainers for the curriculum, it was a week of maker fiesta for students from computers and Electronics background.

These sessions have triggered an avalanche of fresh and off the box ideas among the energetic engineers. The ideas revolved around practical solutions for major concerns of the society. The launch of Maker Space in this particular college would be of enormous significance to make all the ideas turn in to a workable prototypes, creating a step ahead for the students in enhancing their product building ability.

At Collab House we believe that future is through collaboration. Solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems can be built through collaboration. The more minds we can put on those solutions, the better off we will all be. People need creative hubs for harnessing the potential of the ecosystem and inspiration from art, technology and community that pushes their limits.

That was the idea with Blossoms, the installation explores interaction and response via sound and coordinated movements. It was challenging to achieve the essence of nature by creating a cluster of flowers which responds to our presence by movement and sound.

We met PreLab and shared the idea of doing an art installation that combine art, technology and enable human interaction. That’s when Blossoms came up. PreLab works on bringing digital innovation into the field of art and architecture.

The city’s/ regions have intellectual capital and has a wealth of resources but in silos. These connected networks don’t just materialize, even when a city has wealth of resources. They take planning, coordination and time to emerge.
We are working with different platforms around our ecosystem to genereate awareness around comaking and inspire people through art innovation.

Hackster.io started in 2013 with a commitment to help people everywhere learn how to program, connect and create Internet-connected hardware. Today, Hackster community has grown to 50,000 developers, makers and entrepreneurs who build projects as means for learning and discovery.

Hackster put people and learning ahead of commercial interests, and they’ve built an amazing network of partners who believe in a unique mission.

  • 3 – Rapid IoT Dev on Raspberry Pi using WebIOPi IoT framework – By Syed Anwaarullah

This is the first meetup of the Hyderabad chapter of Hackster.io. Session started off with introduction to various IoT platforms, Arduino, Raspberry pi and several other web APIs.

 

The hall was filled with makers when Rithvik and Surender started explaining about various web platforms providing free access for startups and makers to use their servers in order to develop great products. The session went interactive when simple makes and hacks using Raspberry Pi are demonstrated by Anwarullah.

 

Anwarullah being a hardcore hacker and passionate makers who makes use of various electronic components to develop amazing IoT devices. The make of switching on a light bulb using relay switch and Raspberry pie and generating a wifi hotspot using the same pi  is demonstrated to the crowd.

The QA session was very interactive with every attendee clearing their doubts on various cutting edge technologies enabled by cross platform and cross generation IoT devices.
